Walking a razor’s edge between sugarsweet pop suss and caffeine-fuelled psychosis, Cardiff’s Joanna Gruesome are doing more than simply giving class-of-C86 indiepop a much-needed shot in the arm. Rather, they’re elevating it way beyond retro revivalism or classicism into an incendiary assault that’s as economical as it is invigorating. We never heard ‘dissonant wimp music’ sound as much fun as this.
