The Gluts

“Responding to a global crisis by forming a girl band!”

The Gluts – Gina Birch, Kaffe Matthews and Hayley Newman – are an environmentally crusading girl band. They formed in 2009 to write ‘Café Carbon’, a series of eco-absurdo-feminist songs about food, capitalism and climate change. Their menu of songs include short and pithy starters, such as ‘Stone Cold Soup’ alongside more filling main courses like ‘Roast of Greenwash’ and sweet deserts ‘Arctic Roll’ and ‘Passion Fruit Pie’. Impossibly daft, poetic and deadly serious, their Gluttish performances are a twist of art, poetry, music, activism and dance sprinkled with fashion, passion, glamour and deadpan-humor. They have sung on trains, in front of police lines, on marches, in a circus-tent, on Oxford Street, at Speakers Corner and on the bus and are looking forward to the luxurious comfort of performing on stage at Supernormal.

Gina Birch is a musician, filmmaker and founder member of legendary feminist band The Raincoats and member of Red Crayola, who work with Art and Language. Hayley Newman is an artist, performer and activist, author of ‘Common’ and self-appointed artist-in-residence in the City of London. Kaffe Matthews is a sound artist and composer who has made work with sonic bikes, hammerhead sharks the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
